Commons Biere de Garde Bottle Release at Cheese Bar on Wednesday April 4th

Press Release:  We're really excited to announce our first 7 barrel batch bottle release. Our Biere de Garde was inspired by the farmhouse beers brewed in Northern France and our friend Steve Jones, Proprietor and Cheesemonger at Cheese Bar in Portland, Oregon. When Steve was lamenting about the dearth of food friendly Biere de Gardes in our area we took that as a cue to develop a beer that would fill the gap. Traditionally, Biere de Garde was brewed in Winter and early Spring while the climate was cooler, then garded (lagered) during the cool months, and reserved for consumption during the summer. This beer offers a soft and clean, malt forward flavor with a reserved hop profile.

On Wednesday, April 4th, we'll be at Cheese Bar from 6-9PM to celebrate the release. Biere de Garde will be available on draft and Cheese Bar will have bottles at a discount on the night of the release. We'll also have bottles available for sale at our Tasting Room beginning this weekend. Hours are Friday 5-9PM and Saturday 4-9PM.

Also on Wednesday at Cheese Bar, beginning 7PM, our brewer, Sean Burke, will be spinning some of his favorite old country western records as part of Cheese Bar's Brewer DJ Night.

3 Year Anniversary & Blend Love Bottle Release Party!

3 Year Anniversary & Blend Love Bottle Release Party!

Friday March 30th 4:30-9pm

Upright  Brewing
240 N. Broadway Suite 002
Portland, OR
http://www.uprightbrewing.com/

Upright Brewing is three years in! To celebrate, come join us at the brewery Friday the 30th from 4:30 to 9 pm and check out our newest seasonal beer, Blend Love! In just 3 years Upright Brewing has created a mind numbing amount of beers and helped to bring Saisons and Farmhouse-style Ales back into style. Owner/Brewer Alex Ganum is known for his food oriented style of brewing and for his barrel-aged wild ales and fruit beers. There may be no beer more quintessentially Upright Brewing than the latest release 'Blend Love' which is set to become the breweries annual anniversary bottle release and is a tribute to fellow brewer Ben Love.

Four casks containing a sour cherry version of the Four were blended with about a cask and a half of raspberry laden Six to create this characterful sour ale, full of lactic and acetic character, fruit and oak tannins, and a light funkiness from brettanomyces yeast. It was a blast to produce and then name this beer after one of Upright's favorite people and brewers, Ben Love. It's perfectly ready to enjoy now but will cellar well for several years. One keg will be on tap along with plenty of bottles for sale at $12 a 750ml and $125 a case. Please note there will be a single case per person limit. During the anniversary on the 30th, expect to see some other neat beers on tap as well!

Widmer Brothers Brewing Releases Oatmeal Porter

Widmer Brothers Brewing Releases Oatmeal Porter
Expands Series 924 With First of Three Limited-Release Beers
PORTLAND, Ore. – Feb. 28, 2012 – Widmer Brothers Brewing is expanding its Series 924 with the introduction of Oatmeal Porter, the first of three limited-release Series 924 beers that will be unveiled in 2012. Joining the two year-round Series 924 offerings, Pitch Black IPA and Nelson Imperial IPA, this rich porter was brewed with custom-toasted oats made specifically for Widmer Brothers by Briess Malting of Chilton, Wis. The oats, which have appropriately been dubbed “Bro-Oats,” contribute to the beer’s velvety mouth feel and distinct nutty flavors.  Hints of caramel and toffee give this brew a touch of sweetness, complemented by mocha aromas and a smooth finish. Oatmeal Porter is now available in four-packs of 12-ounce bottles, in 22-ounce bottles and on draught nationwide.

“Oatmeal Porter is a great addition to Series 924, as it really adds balance to Nelson Imperial and Pitch Black as part of the series,” said Ben Dobler, a Widmer Brothers brewer. “We loved the idea of brewing a beer with a custom-roasted oat blend, but rather than brew the more popular oatmeal stout style, we wanted something a little different – and Oatmeal Porter turned out great.”

About Oatmeal Porter:
Ingredients:
  • Malts: Pale, Bro-Oats, Munich 20L, Dark Chocolate, Special Roast
  • Hops: Alchemy and Cascade

Profile:
  • Original Gravity: 14.2 P
  • Apparent Extract: 3.2 P
  • IBU: 27
  • ABV: 6%
  • Color: 60 SRM

Widmer Brothers Expands Series 924:
Widmer Brothers’ Series 924 was launched in 2011 with the intention of offering special, but accessible, high-end craft beers. Series 924 is named after the address of Widmer Brothers’ brewery building: 924 Russell Street in Portland, Ore. Established as a place for those who share a love for the art of brewing and the taste for great handcrafted beers, 924 is where brewery co-founders Kurt and Rob Widmer built a home for creative craft brewing. It’s where Widmer Brothers’ brewers brew without boundaries in the pursuit of the perfect pint, and where beer lovers come together to share and be inspired by every batch.

To date, Series 924 has included two year-round offerings: Nelson Imperial IPA and Pitch Black IPA. In an effort to showcase some of the most innovative of its brewers’ creations, Widmer Brothers Brewing is expanding Series 924 to include three additional limited-release beers. The beers will be released at different points throughout the year, beginning with Oatmeal Porter.

About Widmer Brothers Brewing
What started as a dream for two ordinary brothers who just loved beer has now become a reality for two ordinary brothers who still just love beer. Kurt and Rob Widmer helped lead the Pacific Northwest craft beer movement in 1984 when, in their 20s, they dreamed of brewing unique interpretations of traditional beer styles. In 1986, Widmer Brothers Brewing introduced the first American-style Hefeweizen; today, the unfiltered cloudy beer is the company’s signature brew and one of the best-selling wheat beers in the country. Based in Portland, Ore., the brewery currently brews a variety of beers including Drifter Pale Ale, Nelson Imperial IPA, Rotator IPA Series, Drop Top Amber Ale and Pitch Black IPA. Recent Trip To Texas In Pictures Part 1

Here are some pictures from our recent trip back to Austin, Texas. We started off the 1st day with a tasting of mostly NW beer that we had brought for sharing. The next set of pictures is at Uncle Billy's Brew & Que to hang out with our good friends Amos Lowe and Brian "Swifty" Peters. Then we hit Red's Porch  for some food and beer then on to Billy's On Burnet to enjoy their great happy hour with more friends. We did hit Draught House(which is my favorite beer bar/brewpub in Texas) but for some reason didn't find it necessary to take any pictures there.

Part 2 coming soon...

Brewing up Cocktails presents Winter Holiday Special Edition Tonight at The Hop & Vine!

Brewing up Cocktails presents Winter Holiday Special Edition at The Hop & Vine!

Saturday December 10th 6-9pm
(Drinks individually priced)
The Hop & Vine
1914 N. Killingsworth
Portland, OR 97217

This holiday season welcome back Brewing up Cocktails for a special winter warmer/holiday themed evening of Beer Cocktails at The Hop & Vine. Last winter's edition was perhaps the most popular installment of Brewing Up Cocktails ever, featuring acclaimed drinks like the Hot Scotchy, Wassail, and the Furburger, all three of which will make their return on December 10th. There will also be four brand new beer cocktails to set your head right and warm the cockles of your heart as the holidays near.

The new beer cocktails run the gamut of styles:  Three varieties will be served hot to fend off the winter cold, an effervescent and citrusy take on the French 75, a fruity and hoppy punch made with IPA, and a silky smooth beer flip. There will be something for everyone at this event, even an ugly Christmas sweater contest! Drink list...

Hot Drinks
Wassail
Returning from last year's hit Brewing up Cocktails is the hot mulled classic Wassail made with a base of Deschutes Jubelale slowly heated in a crockpot with brandy, sherry, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and orange. Served warm in a mug with a lemon slice.

Hot Scotchy
Beervana described  the Hot Scotchy as "The Greatest Beverage in the World." Perhaps the most popular beer cocktail to date, made with hot unfermented beer and Scotch. It may be the perfect winter brewers beverage.

Hot Choklat
A new creation served steaming hot, it is one boozy treat. Starting with a base of dark rum, a little Galliano Ristretto is added and then topped off with steamed 9% abv Choklat Imperial Stout and a float of whipped cream. Served with or without a dash of chili powder.

Cold Drinks

Trade Winds Punch:
Rum, gin, vanilla Beans, grapefruit zest, ripe guavas, Chinese five spice powder, and a stalk of lemongrass are infused over night and then built into a tasty beer punch the next day with fresh lime juice, citrusy IPA, and sugar. This is our recreation of punch originated by Washington, DC bartender Jon Harris. You have never had anything like it, we promise you.

Euclidean 75
The lightest and most refreshing of the bunch, the Euclidean 75 is made with gin, lemon, and sugar,  then topped off with an effervescent and refreshingly tart Berliner-Weisse. A creation from Denver bartender and beer cocktail afficionado Ryan Conklin of Euclid Hall.
Furburger
The lovingly named Furburger returns from the very first Brewing up Cocktails. Black and thick as night with chocolate and roasty creaminess from Great Divide's Oak Aged Yeti Imperial Stout, balanced with herbal Chartreuse and bourbon.
Smoked Vanilla Bean Flip
This creamy dessert of a beer cocktail has an incredible melange of flavors, from the anise-tinged aquavit to cream sherry, rhubarb and chocolate bitters, one whole egg, and Stone Brewing's Smoked Porter.

About Brewing up Cocktails:
Founded in July 2010 in Portland, OR the Brewing up Cocktails series of events explores the interplay of craft beer and spirits to create a new breed of beer cocktails. Csons GreetingsOne of the most anticipated beers of the year, C-sons Greetings is a higher alcohol version of Lompoc's popular C-Note Imperial Pale Ale, brewed and dry-hopped with even more of the seven "C" hops - Crystal, Cluster, Cascade, Chinook, Centennial, Columbus and Challenger. The dark amber-colored barley wine features a soft oak character with notes of raisins and figs. Get a designated driver, this beer comes in at 9.7% ABV. This beer was named in honor of legendary publican Don Younger.
